On December 28, 2020, members of the Bharat Diamond Exchange (BDB), the world's largest diamond trading center in Mumbai, India, voted to allow the trading of laboratory grown diamonds.
On December 29, 2020, the gemstone and jewelry export promotion council of India (GJEPC) issued a statement saying that the change will take effect immediately after the Bharat diamond exchange sets guidelines for nurturing the diamond sector. Member companies are allowed to trade laboratory grown diamonds only after they have signed and agreed to follow the relevant guidelines.
