Synthetic diamond refers to artificial materials that are completely the same in appearance, chemical composition and crystal structure with natural diamond made through certain technology and process flow in laboratory or factory.
Synthetic diamond itself is a kind of artificial gem, to look at it rationally, do not take it as imitation diamond, is a dignified artificial synthetic diamond. There are two main types of gem-grade synthetic diamonds:
1. HTHP synthetic diamond (static pressure method)
HTHP synthetic method is mainly produced by BARS press. This method has low cost and small volume, but only one diamond can be synthesized at a time. Most high temperature and high pressure synthetic diamond to yellow, brown, low price, more as a substitute for natural color diamond.
2. CVD synthetic diamond (Chemical vapor precipitation)

It is almost impossible to distinguish synthetic diamonds from natural diamonds, which is why synthetic diamonds are better than ordinary imitation diamonds as a substitute for natural diamonds.
1. Zoom in to observe
HPHT synthetic diamond: common metal catalyst inclusion, point inclusion with cloud distribution, and color band or color block corresponding to the growth area. CVD synthetic diamond: There are few internal features, sometimes irregular or punctured inclusions.
2. UV fluorescence
HPHT synthetic diamond: long wave is usually inert; Under the short wave, there is no strong light yellow, orange yellow, green yellow, green blue, etc., uneven, part of the phosphorescence, usually short wave fluorescence is stronger than long wave. CVD synthetic diamond: fluorescence can be weak to strong orange yellow, orange red, yellow-green, blue-green or inert, usually short wave fluorescence is stronger than long wave.
3. Luminous image
HPHT synthetic diamond: most of them show obvious growth zone characteristics, different growth areas, luminous color is different. CVD synthetic diamond: the luminous color is orange yellow, orange red, blue green, green, blue violet and so on, and the lamination growth pattern can be seen.
4. UV-Visible-near infrared absorption spectrum
HPHT synthetic diamond: the absorption of yellow HPHT synthetic diamond gradually increases from 550 nm to short wave, and the absorption peak of colorless synthetic diamond is usually 227 nm, and most of them are 270 nm. Sometimes, characteristic absorption peaks such as 880 nm can be seen. CVD synthetic diamond: Usually visible 227 nm, sometimes 270 nm, 737 nm and other characteristic absorption peaks.
5. Infrared spectrum
HPHT synthetic diamond: Yellow HPHT synthetic diamond is mainly Ib type, with 1344 cm-1 characteristic absorption peak and 1130 cm-1 characteristic absorption wide peak. After HPHT treatment, it can be Ia+Ib type. Colorless HPHT synthetic diamonds are type IIa or IIa+IIb, and blue HPHT synthetic diamonds are type IIb. CVD synthetic diamonds: CVD synthetic diamonds are mainly of type IIa and may also have solitary nitrogen or boron absorption peaks.
6. Photoluminescence spectrum
HPHT synthetic diamond: low temperature (liquid nitrogen) conditions, many 883.2nm / 884.9nm characteristic luminescence double peaks. CVD synthetic diamond: at low temperature (liquid nitrogen), it can have 596 nm/597 nm, 736.6 nm/736.9 nm and other characteristic luminescence peaks.
Strong magnet confirms that the sample to be tested is magnetic, and part of HPHT synthetic diamond will appear magnetic.
