The history of laboratory-grown diamonds
Since the first diamond was discovered more than 2500 years ago, this dazzling gem has been endowed with extremely high value. Until now, despite the discovery of more diamond mines, natural diamonds are still at the top of the jewelry consumption pyramid.
Compared with the long history of natural diamonds, cultivated diamonds born in the middle of the last century are considered new. a. At the end of the 18th century, French chemist Lavoisier discovered that diamond is a simple crystal composed of carbon formed under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions in the deep part of the earth, providing a theoretical basis for later cultivating diamond technology.
b. In 1952, William Iverso, a scientist at the US Federal Silicon Carbide Corporation, used chemical vapor deposition (Chemical Vapor Deposition, referred to as CVD) to continuously deposit carbon-containing gas on the diamond seeds, gradually accumulating and hardening to form diamonds.
c.In 1954, General Electric’s “Super Pressure Project” leader, Dr. Hall, led the team to make a breakthrough in the field of diamond cultivation technology and gave birth to what the industry called “High Pressure High Temperature Synthetic Diamonds” (HPHT).

e. In 1970, the General Electric Company of the United States successfully cultivated large-grain gem-quality diamonds through improved technology, but did not produce mass production.

h. Starting on July 24, 2018, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) changed the definition of diamonds. After full consultation with the industry, the FTC pointed out that the sales staff must clearly disclose the fact that diamonds are artificially cultivated man-made and "ores", and explained that "cultured" or similar "man-made" should be used as much as possible. i. On March 9, 2020, IGI International Gemological Institute identified a 7.06 carat CVD cultivated diamond. The birth of this diamond also marks the maturity of high-quality, large-carat CVD cultivated diamond technology.
