CVD (chemical vapor deposition) diamond, commonly known as single crystal CVD diamond, is a kind of synthetic single crystal diamond. It is a mixture of carbon containing gas and oxygen, which is excited to decompose at high temperature and pressure lower than the standard atmospheric pressure to form activated diamond carbons, The polycrystalline diamond (or diamond single crystal or quasi single crystal) is deposited on the substrate. Because CVD diamond does not contain any metal catalyst, its thermal stability is close to that of natural diamond. Like the Synthetic Polycrystalline Diamond at high temperature and high pressure, the CVD diamond grains are disordered and have no brittle cleavage surface, so they are isotropic. CVD diamond is now used as a tool material.
The high hardness and wear resistance of diamond make CVD diamond an excellent tool material. Compared with PCD, this material has the advantages of good thermal stability and long tool life. The disadvantage is that the cohesive strength between grains is low, and the material shows large internal stress and brittleness.
